Landscapes Gallery

This gallery contains some of my best landscape photos, captured over the past 15 years in the Jackson Hole area.

Sunrise

Sunrise at the Old Patriarch Tree

The Old Patriarch Tree is an ancient Limber Pine clinging to one of the benches in Grand Teton National Park. The northeast side of the tree split off from the trunk revealing beautiful textures that glow in the morning light. The Cathedral Group view of the Teton Range is seen in the background.

Lost Creek Sunrise

Lost Creek Sunrise

This beautiful image was captured long before the first rays of the sun hit the valley floor. These kinds of clouds only happen a couple of times per month and the foliage only looks this way for a couple of days once a year. This photo contains both of Grand Teton National Park’s major peaks and a spattering of fall aspens. We have this image hanging on our living room wall.

Oxbow at Night

Oxbow Bend at Night

I took this photo before the Park Service told us we can’t use flashlights to add artificial light to a scene. I waited until all of the tourists and photographers had gone home, then did my magic using a long exposure and a large flashlight.

Fall Homestead
Fall Homestead

The historic old Chambers Homestead sits along Mormon Row in Grand Teton National Park. The bright fall foliage and dark blue skies compliment each other in this image.

Autumn Morning
Autumn Morning

During the fall, there are so many photographic opportunities! Some include the big Grand Teton vistas, but I enjoy pointing the other direction once in a while .

Old Patriarch Tree

Old Patriarch Tree

I had hiked out to this old tree at least three times that year, trying to capture a good photo of this old Limber Pine. None of the ones I took were worth the effort. The area closes for the winter on October 31st each year. That year, I went out one more time on the 31st, but when I got there it was pea soup cloudy. I hiked out anyway. Not long after I set up my tripod, the wind began blowing and it pushed the fog away to reveal the streaking clouds above the tree and the Cathedral Group. This time, it was definitely worth the effort!

Oxbow Bend Splendor

Oxbow Bend Splendor

I’ve lived in Jackson Hole over 35 years, photographing at Oxbow Bend in the Fall on at least 17 of them! Every once in a while, all of the elements come together.

NEOWISE Comet

NEOWISE Comet

I spent quite a bit of time trying to get a good photo of the NEOWISE Comet. Finally, late one clear evening, I lined it up over the Tetons. The clouds seemed to add a little extra without covering up the comet.

Storm Above

The Storm Above

If I still lived in Oklahoma and saw these kinds of clouds, I’d be heading for a storm shelter. This is the John Moulton Barn on Mormon Row in Grand Teton National Park.

End of the Rainbow

When the storm moved through, and the rain started falling, all of the tourists left Schwabacher Landing. I stayed out, covering my gear with a plastic bag. I got soaked, but my gear was plenty dry! As the storm passed, I started seeing the beginnings of a rainbow. Eventually, the rainbow spanned the entire sky, but thinned as it reached the Grand.

Passing Storm at the Old Patriarch Tree

Passing Storm at the Old Patriarch Tree

The Old Patriarch Tree is well off the beaten path. In fact there are no signs pointing to it, nor actual trails leading to it. When I want to “get away” from the crowds in Grand Teton National Park, I often choose the Old Patriarch Tree as a destination. On this morning, an impressive storm front blew over the Tetons, giving me ample opportunities for distinctive photos.

Alpenglow at Snake River Overlook

Alpenglow at Snake River Overlook

I never know when I am going to be treated to one of these mornings. It takes patience and an ample dose of persistence to be there at the right time. Of course, for these shots, it’s also darned cold! This panoramic image includes both the Grand and Mt. Moran protruding from a low fog bank at their their bases. The Snake River winds through the Jackson Hole valley on its way to Pallisades Reservoir and eventually to the Pacific Ocean.

Grand Lightning at Hedrick's Pond

Grand Lightning at Hedrick’s Pond

If there is ever a “once in a lifetime” capture, this has to be it! I was at the overlook at Hedrick’s Pond to trying to capture the wildflowers when this massive storm rolled in. The lighning bolt had to have been a 20 miles long!

Sometimes black and white images are even more “powerful” than their color counterpart. I like this image both ways!
